In the short story, "Woman Hollering Creek," the main character, Cléofilas, is in an abusive relationship for most of the story, and finally manages to escape-- while pregnant with her second child-- with the help of Lucile (a free spirited mexican woman who drives *duh da duhhhh* a PICKUP TRUCK!! this story delves into the issue of abuse and it really gets readers hoping she'll gather the strength to leave her alcoholic husband. The issue of whether or not cleofilas should leave him is such an interesting one that we had a mini-formal debate about it in class wednesday. My team did the 2nd affirmative. It was a really interesting excersize. The resolve: Cleofilas should honor her marriage vows with her husbad and stay with him. As you may guess, this seems to be an impossible resolve to affirm-- afterall-- ITS AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP! but, there were passages that we found helpful-- we had to play with the fact that Cleofilas has the "typical" mentality of an abused woman.
Another exercise that i found particularly fun was role playing. we broke into five groups and each group had to get into the mentality of a character from, "Never Marry A Mexican." This was an amazing exercise-- my group got to pay the main character-- the home wrecker!!! It was a great exercise! We had to answer any questions other characters put before us-- in character! Wow... i really like doing things like that.
Well, thats all for now.
enjoie, and i'll be writing more in a week!
