In his book "In our time", Ernest Hemingway tells us the story of a soldier facing the shock of returning home. I wasn't very surprise to read "I can't" as this soldier's response to his mother asking him to pray. Chapter VII is the story of a soldier (the same one?) who is right in the middle of the fire at the front and is scare for his life. Hemingway does a great job in just few lines to show us the terrible situation with no hope for this soldier. His only escape is to pray. I see a similarity in both stories: God is a god of weakness. They never pray him when everything is fine, only when hopes are gone. Therefore it is a normal thing that once home, safe, away from the front, this soldier doesn't want to pray God. I think that it is very brave and honest of Hemingway to make us understanding the failure of God. However, he is gently enough not to tell it so clearly but to make us understanding it on our own, except probably if we personality believe in God without any doubt or questions.
