Over the last week or so, a couple of things have happened that make me worry for myself.
First was the speech by Iris Chang. Everything she was talking about seemed pretty "abhorrent", what with the rape and all the killing. Then I got to see the picture of the Iraqi prisoners being tortured.
What set me off thinking is my reaction. Everyone goes on about how disgusting and inhumane the treatment of the Iraqi prisoners is, but I personally feel disgusted in anyway. I know that it is wrong, the way the prisoners are tortured, and all the killing that is going on, but I find myself not really caring. My thinking is, "it's war, what rules are there in war?" Extracting information is all part and parcel of what goes on in war. America now is like the British army in that Mel Gibson movie, about America fighting for their independence or something. The British were appalled at the guerilla tactics of Mel Gibson and his men, because it was ungentlemanly. When fighting a war, one cannot really afford to be gentlemanly and avoid collateral damage. But then again I guess Tony Blair put it best, when he said that they were there to stop all the torture, not take part in it.
Perhaps it's because I was a history student in high school, reading about all the death and destruction, so much so I have become 'immune' to it. Kind of sucks not feeling anything though, have to fake it sometimes to not appear like a freak. haha
