"From the way she talks one shouldn’t be surprised to find out that she isn’t a republican. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if she were a vegetarian, tree hugger, animal rights activist, feminist, or a lesbian either. I just don’t see humans as being “good at heart”. People have taboo motivations that drive them."

This was written about a speaker we heard on campus Wednesday afternoon. Her name is Elmaz Abinader. She did two perfomance art pieces about war and violence. While I thought she was very talented, I will admit that her style is not exactly my cup of tea. I do feel that she permitted us a glimpse at the other side of the violence. A different perspective than what we get on the news.
Overall she struck me as a very confident, powerful woman. She is solid in her beliefs and expresses them vehemently. Those are two qualities to be admired. I am a bit offended that just because she said some things that this person did not like she gets 6 labels attached to her name. All of those labels have NEGATIVE connotations. The negative connotations have been given to us by our families, media, and religion. Statements such as these only perpetuate these false notions. I would really like to know what taboo motivation is being a vegetarian or a "tree hugger?" For that matter, I would like to know what the taboo motivation is for all of them. Feel free to enlighten me.
