Posted by Qin Chan, 4/30/04 at 12:17:52 AM. Should have done this a long time ago, but my computer has been infected by the 'popular' sassar worm that has been going around the web these days.

Anyway, this is my posting for my blog partner's expressive paper 1.

'The portrait of Heroines' In the paper, Dyson gave many good examples of the roles of the female characters in 'The Odyssey'. The main discussion were about Penelope and Athena. I agree with Dyson's position that they are depicted as righteous, strong-willed and fair woman, and they do represent the best side of women. The paper concluded with the notion that the women in the story are the underlying characters who guide the story and are the true heroines. Although i agree that the female characters do play an important part in "The Odyssey" as Odyessus's ultimate goal is to return home and go back to his wife, Penelope. And Athena''s role as the goddess who helps Odysseus along the way. Without her, it would be impossible for him to return to Ithaca. But after so much has been said, I must say that it is apparent to me that the main character's in "The Odyssey" are Odysseus and Telemachus. The story starts with Telemachus, and most of part of the book writes about Odysseus's adventures and journey, and finally the final battle of Telemachus and Odysseus against the suitors. Do not want to sound sexist here, but I cant really imagine reading an epic like "The Odyssey" with female roles as main characters.
