We talked about shakespeares 'Much Ado About Nothing' on wednesday, and we each gave our impression on the movie. While watching the show, I noticed a number of differences when i was reading. So I just want to name a few more that i have observed that day.
- I talked about the body language of the actors in class. The body language of the actors makes a big difference when watching the movie compared to reading the text. In some cases, I understood the play even though I wasnt paying attention to the words they were saying.
- Parts without dialogue. The text usually tells the reader the dialogue between characters, but when there is no talking, the silence can only be shown on the screen. An example would be the last part when Beautrice turned back and looked at Benedict. Gave an odd look at him and then walked off. That is something we dont get to read in the book.
- The tone and momentum the actors conversed with each other gave the play more energy. I especially liked when Benedick and Beautrice sparred with each other. The sharp jabs at each other with old english just makes it so much more interesting and entertaining. For me, I would take it as a complement if someone took the time to insult me in such an elegant manner.
- Costumes and setting was also a factor. Although the backdrop and the costumes the actors wore were generally close to what i had imagined. I could not understand why the prince's was ear pierced. I dont have anything against pierced ears, but why would a noble in his time have that adornment? It may just be my ignorance, but did they have does practices in those days?
