Usually, Honors students start asking around about new honors cohort or core classes when their registration date draws nearer. Today, I would just like to describe a bit about how it is like to be in a honors cohort class. Currently, I am in Math 1b and it has been designated as a honors section .Not all the students are honors student, there are only 5 of us.
The honors section didnt really start immediately in the winter quarter. It was only a few weeks later were we handed our honors project. We have to look through the questions, come up with solutions and present it to the class. Although our math instructor is Mr. Sekhon, we discuss our honors project with Mr. Mosh. We were given 2 math questions, the first one is about the Taylor Series which would be taught in Math 1c, the other question was one about parametric equations. I drew a blank when we were first given the questions, but we were able to figure out the problems after some explanation by Mr.Mosh.
Today was one of the few meetings we had of the honors section. The meeting was today, a friday afternoon, so the library was pretty much empty when we met. We started our discussion on the questions at around 12.30pm, moved on to the details about our presentation next week. And we believe next thursday would be the best time to present it since we are still going to have another 3 more math test next week. After an hour of vigorous talk about our project, we shifted our attention to other less important stuff. Talked about classes, exchanged info about courses and our intended majors. We have also registered for the same Math 1c class next quarter, which we hope we will be able to have another honors section.
We ended the meeting at about 3.30pm, I would say it was a good day's work. The honors thing may have started off slow, but i'm sure it will be much more interesting and active next quarter when we can start our project early.
