Well, the truth is i dont believe they know whether they are gnawing at their legs or not. But after reading Fast Food Nation last quarter about how animals are bred. It really disgust me when i think about it. Although i am in no hurry to join any 'care for animal' organizations anytime soon, it still bothers me when i think about torturing animals. I mean its true they are animals, and we cant spend all our resources treating them like humans and demand all humans to reject their caveman instincts to revert back to vegetarians. But i'm sure there is a minimum standard in which we can treat them. We will still kill them for food, but why not make it less painful for it. A sharp knife, and a swift movement of the hand will end it there and then. We can still argue about whether killing it slowly or quickly does not make much of a difference, we are still taking life....personally, i believe there is a difference.

I dont have any strong feelings about animal abuse, but what really makes me uncomfortable is feeding animals with other dead animals' remains. We feed cows with dead chickens, sheeps, dogs, cats. Even if you are not an animal lover, can you imagine what you are eating everyday? All that delicious red meat on ur plate were made up of dead rotting corpse.
