I was doing some research on Ernest Hemingway for my paper 4 and decided to check out the Nobel Prize he won for literature. I read the speech given by Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, and I felt it was a very well written speech which describes Ernest Hemingway as one of the greatest american writer of his time. I have taken out some excerpts from the speech.
"When mentioning these principal elements in his production, one should not forget that his narrative skill often attains its highest point when cast in a smaller mould, in the laconic, drastically pruned short story, which, with a unique combination of simplicity and precision, nails its theme into our consciousness so that every blow tells."
After reading the presentation speech for The Nobel Prize in Literature 1954, I have gained another level of respect for Ernest Hemginway. In my paper 3, i have described his writing as outdated and 'no longer appealing', but by doing so I would wish to convince myself through the research i will do that he is indeed a man who has made a difference in American literature.
